How to do a lesson plan presentation on Bilingual Education?

Kandi Lough: The lesson plan should be for secondary education if that helps.

Esteban Faggett: That's really not enough information. Are you in a teacher education class? Are you talking to future teachers? Your goal should be to educate them on what bilingual education is and the research showing it's effectiveness. There are articles by Virginia Collier that might be of help. Look up some information on the bilingual model. What it usually means is that non-native speakers of English get instruction in the content areas in their native language while their English skills improve. The object is partly to keep up their content knowledge, and partly to keep up their native language skills. Many ESL students only know their native languages in the form of daily conversations in their homes- not academic language skills. In the case of American born Chinese, for example, they rarely know how to read and write in their native language. That's a shame, because it's a re! source that will help them get employed and help their employers. Goal: to inform future teachers about bilingual educationObjective: SW be able to describe the bilingual model of education and compare its effectiveness to ESL instruction.Activity: If you speak another language, it would be great to give them a lecture like they might give native speakers of English, but in a language they don't understand. That will show them how it feels for a student who doesn't understand English when they are sitting in a class not understanding anything. There's a great video from the CAL called "Mrs. Amin" where she gives a lecture in Farsi, and then the same lecture with props that make her meaning clear....Show more
