Is it ok to feed your dog regular food?

Tawny Grosskreutz: Heartworm has now been diagnosed in both dogs and cats in every state in the US. It is a parasite spread by mosquitoes, so it is important that your dogs be on a preventative during any months in your area when the night time temperatures are above freezing.Heartworm infection is fairly uncommon in patients who see the vet regularly. This is because most veterinarians are successful in educating their clients in the importance of its prevention. If you look up some case reports of dogs who have been treated for heartworm, you might be surprised at how awful the disease is. Even with veterinary care and hospitalization, only 30% of patients diagnosed with advanced heartworm infection survive. It is extremely difficult and dangerous to treat, and the results are often unhappy. The prevention, Ivermectin tablets once monthly, is 100% effective. If heartworm preventative is administered year round, there is 0% risk for your dog to become infected. For! $30 a year I think those are pretty good odds, considering the alternative is a painful, grueling ordeal with a guarded prognosis at best.

Toney Flaten: As long as your dog has no problems digesting the food. Still has regular bowel movements, and urinates as usual, then where is there a problem. Like some others have said, just don't feed your dog chocolate and you and your pet will be just great friends.

Travis Colomb: Yes and no. Heartgard can be given every 3 months to solely prevent heart worms. However, vets recommend it every month so it can prevent parasites (roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm), as well. The life cycle of a parasite is 28 days, so to make it simple for owners, we say once a month.

Verdie Wollen: Not good idea - it'll make him put on weight. And his digestive system isn't used to what we eat. A little treat once in a while won't do any harm but for the dog's sake I suggest you stick to dog food. If you start feeding him/her your own ! meals there's no knowing where it will end. Cookies, chocs, ic! e cream. dogs can become really greedy.

Chi Alfero: i dont feed my dogs human food. I wanted to try the raw diet... but i dont agree with animals getting human food. So i wont do that. as far as anything else... no i would not bother. If it is like plain chicken... or steaks... or something plain. (no salt or seasonings) that might be ok. only as a treat or a taste. Human food is for humans. or it would all be called animal food.

Carli Watterson: I give both my dogs heartworm preventative year-round. Dogs contract heartworm through a mosquito bite, and while it's true that you see mosquitos more during hot weather, they can appear at any time. Heartworm can be deadly, and Heartgard is cheap. Why risk it?

Granville Stray: Okay, so I don't do pet insurance, but I hope you don't mind me sharing my opinions all the same :c)I think the better idea, if it is an option for you, is to have a credit card set up and waiting specifically for a dog emergency like t! his. This is what we do and our reasoning is that the likeliness you would have something actually happen at all and that would actually be covered by insurance is rare.I would instead bank that monthly fee into a saving account and keep that credit card set aside for just such emergencies. It will save you a ton in the end.

Sheree Hipwell: I agree, in some cases I do think it's a scam. The reason I'm considering is because I'm currently in school, etc. If my dog were to break her leg, it would help me out a lot if I knew that I could get a couple thousand dollars reimbursed for the surgery. (especially since some of the catastrophic care is only $10 a month)

Ron Keliipio: i don't insure any of my dogs i have opened a seperate bank account just for paying vet bills, buying the food etc.i get trouble with the house insurance if i have to put a claim in so thats why i decided to open the seperate account for the dogs.

Saran Stealy: Really it isnt, there! are some things you can get by with giving them, but the fact is that ! over hundreds of years dogs have grown used to being fed pretty much straight cornmeal, its one of the major ingrediants in dog food.So as a result alot of dogs can get sick, or have digestion problems. But my family and myself do slip treats to our dogs, whether it be a potato chip, or a slice of chicken meat, and they are all healthy and alive.Just make sure whatever you give them that it is given in small and spread out portions and don't go feeding it a whole chocolate bar or hunk of onion!...Show more

Davina Shindler: I have read many books since I have just gotten puppy. Yes you can feed them people food - just not onions, raisens, grapes. And be sure it is a variety not just whatever you want. I don't just feed mine people food though - it's more of a treat, but I do give him garlic (which helps him not get worms and helps with fleas) and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil (which helps keep his coat shiny) mixed in with his food.My dog loves tomatoes, cucumbers ! and I be sure to give him garlic....Show more

Angel Klym: She may be having chills, which would be perfectly normal after the trauma of the day. Keep her warm and quiet. Update your vet in the morning.

Leticia Laiben: My dogs eat anything, I still feed them dog food like I'm supossed to, but everyonce in a while they will get a little treat like left overs, bones, or whenever we clean out the fridge if it is stilll good my dogs eat it. Also it depends onn what type of food you will be giving your dog. My Rot. got attached to eating human food so what we did was we didn't give her any human food for about 3 weeks, and she had nothing but dog food. So now she eats all of her dog food, and she learned that we are only giving her human food as a treat. But really it's your choice. Also I would recommend that you talk to your vet, and see what they have to say about it, because they might have a different opinion. Another thing you should think about is how you are! going to keep your dog on it's regular diet, if you do choose to put i! t on human food. Also what I would do is talk to friends, and family members who also have dogs and get there opinion....Show more

Bethany Blocker: Don't forget about the dangers of chocolate and other processed foods.I feed my pooch Orijen dog food, his poop is much easier to clean up during walks and he never gets sick. Heck, I get sick from a lot of "human" food... I should try some of that Orijen, what's good for a dog must be good for me too. lolz...Show more

Felicitas Phildor: I was wondering if too get insurance, but all the people with insured dogs have said how I shouldnt, and that the companies try really hard to NOT give you any money. Most don't cover anything dental, any shots/spaying/check ups.And also if you're dog has a problem that you didnt know about, but can be proven that it was there before the insurance was taken out, then they dont pay for thatIt's basically for if something suddenly happens to your dog, like a car crash or something. The! n they would pay.But I thought it would be better to jsut save up the money in case that happened, instead of me paying £300+ yearly (thats how much they quoted for my dog)

Providencia Jalbert: if you want to keep your dog no it could be a big risk of his/her life hope this helps

Karie Mavle: I had a Shih Tzu that my mom would feed cooked chicken to all the time. She would mix it in with his regular food. He ended up getting a bad blockage and got very sick. I had to take him to the emergency vet on a Sunday and the vet said if we had waited until Monday morning to take him to the vet he would have died. The first thing the vet asked about was his diet. Then he told us that we shouldn't feed dogs human food so we stopped. He never got another blockage and lived until he was 15.Can you feed them human food? Yes. Should you feed human food? From my experience No. I now have a Bloodhound and he does not get any human food, only dog food....Show more

! Lauri Ohl: i fed my dog boiled chicken and the juice from the pot. he l! oved it!!!!

Cherlyn Tefera: No, People food is for people.. Dog food is for dogs. Not only should your dog not eat people food.. But you should not eat dog food.

Dalia Causby: my american boxer eats anything, he has his own food and treats, but I can eat raw carrots and celery. .he'll want it and eat it.. the only thing that I have learned the hard way was pork products and pork bones are not good for dogs..that came from the vet..

Cliff Jacoby: Heart worms are deadly. If your dog is outside Any at all, even if just to potty, or if he is around other outdoor dogs, there is a risk of heart worms. Some areas of the country are worse than others for the occurrence of and infestation by heart worms. Heart worms cause a very painful, agonizing death. Heartguard works...must be utilized continuously to be effective, but well worth it. Protect your pet, use Heartguard.

George Dingeldein: Sure it is, as long as you are keeping their diet balanced and th! ey are getting enough "vital" nutrients. I would never consider a table food diet unless I knew specifically for certain without a doubt that my boys were getting everything they needed from it, in proper doses. Do some research on your breed and find out what its requirements are, from there you will be able to make an informed decision....Show more

Delora Struzzi: no chocolate, sugar, grapes, or rasins

Ilana Gaster: Rat poison is usually Warfarin (Coumadin) which is a blood thinner. (The rats bleed to death internally) This may just be a nervous response to a vet visit and the trauma of vomiting or it could be a reaction to something else (like an infection). I would check her temperature if possible, and keep her warm with a blanket for an hour or so while calming her and see if she stops. If she has a fever (over 101) or continues to shiver after warming/babying her, call your vet. Also if she is eating and/or drinking, it can be given a little time to re! solve on its own. Just like WE do not want to eat or drink when someth! ing is wrong, usually neither do animals.

Roni Kurz: After reading and researching a lot about feeding my dog human food I found it can be difficult and confusing knowing what foods are o.k. . Commercial dog food can have some real bad stuff in it. I think it is best to read the content labels carefully and buy a high quality dog food. Then treat your dog occasionally to a very small bite of a known human food that he likes and will not be bad for him or make him sick. I give my Chilittle bits of apples and carrots. He loves it and it seems to not bother him in any way....Show more

Alisa Kaleiwahea: human food

Lupe Sancen: NO!What a SCAM!!!What part of "It's a horribly expensive USELESS RIP-OFF" eludes you?Save your money.

Mercedez Trabue: you NEVER EVER let your dog it the food you eat. If you do you will have a very yucky mess to clean up.

Mahalia Brindle: My Dobermanns are insured with PetPlan on their supreme plan. Why do I opt for insura! nce?---------------------------------------The cover is unlimited which means however much the bill came to, including into a new claim year, all I would have to pay is the excess. I have third party cover if my dog causes damage, complementary medicine such as hydotherapy/physiotherapy. For larger claims I can claim direct which means the money is paid by insurance company directly to the veterinary practise. When has insurance been invaluable to me?---------------------------------------------------------------Case 1. In 2003 my male Dobermann Boris was diagnosed with aggressive skin cancer. Referred to a veterinary hospital with a speicalist team of oncologist. Over 3.5 years the bill to PetPlan was in excess of £10,000, I paid £195.00. Boris lived life to the full, so worth every penny.Case 2. A Dobermann b*tch developed pyometra, taken to the emergency vet at 23:00, out of hours surgery. Total bill over £700.00.Case 3. My current Dobermann b*tch ruptured her cruciate! & had TPLO surgery in November 2007. The total bill (including physiot! herapy and hydrotherapy was £4,300. I paid £65.00.

Dan Seen: If you read the ingredients on dog food-it is made out of "regular" food, only it is processed and preserved and made into little chunks. My old black pug (21) when he died, and my terrier mix would eat anything that I would eat. Neither of them got sick. You just have to monitor what they get so it won't make them have the scoots or choke. By the way, my terrier mix is 16 and going strong.

Barton Morfee: Is it really necessary to give my dog heartguard every month? The vet insists on it but they are always looking for ways to make money. My parents only gave my other dogs heartguard in June and July when it was more likely to occur. Opinions???

Myron Leftwich: yes it is!!! and don't let anyone tell you any different. i learned this from professional breeders at a dog show.....here are some things NOT to feed your dog...1. corn, it can cut up the intestines2. chicken, pork, turkey, any hollow ! or soft bones that can splinter, same reason as the corn3. onions, it makes them sick...can't remember why4. caffeine, (chocolate, soda) you can get chocolate at pet smart that has the caffeine taken out.here are some things you CAN feed your dog.....1. green beans, carrots, potatoes, lettuce, spinach, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts2. hamburger, boneless chicken3. tortillas, noodles, rice, oatmeal, bread (white or wheat)4. garlic powder5. plain, unsalted crackers and peanut butter6. beef bones (knees, femur, ribs..)7. pig ears, although they can splinteri make a stew for my dogs, here is the recipe...hamburger, brownedgreen beans, carrots, potatoes, spinachricegarlic powderwater*if you have left over pork bones, you can boil them and use the juice for the stew*my dogs love to eat spinach, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, meat, of course, honeydew melon, water melon, lettuce, and green beans*my dogs hate to eat apples, strawberries, tomatoes, and broccoli* i have also been to! ld that if you give your dog a litlle bit of raw meat once a day, they ! will act better. i've been doing it for 2 years, and my spoiled dogs don't act any better, but they love it!!!* every bit of the information i gave you was confirmed with my veterinarian...Show more

Darwin Ecton: i been doing it sence my dog was a puppy and she healthly and fine and she is 4 year old now

Emerita Sciandra: well it's not that bad but junk food affect dogs double than us and if you want your dog to live a long and happy life you should feed him dog food I am not saying that you can't give him a treat now and then.

Stanton Villao: All three of mine are insured and have been since they were 8 weeks old.The insurance pays for any accidents, and on-going health problems, such as diabetes etc., public liability damage, (if they cause an accident or bite someone it will pay up to 2 million pounds) plus a load of other things.lt paid for Amy to be spayed because it was recommended for health reasons.Milly suffers from allergies and is at the vets mo! nthly for immunotherapy injections, has recurring ear infections and needs her anal glands expressing every 6 weeks, this is all covered by the insurance, over the years it has saved me thousands of pounds. The insurance company pay directly to the vets, all l do is fill a form in and give it to my vet and they do the rest.lt also gives me peace of mind knowing that if anything happens l don't have to worry about finding the money to pay the bills.

Rayford Latz: NO. It insures each and every cat for my area. you are able to no longer insure all of them mutually by way of fact all and sundry of them has distinctive histories.. some may be a hundred% wholesome on a similar time as others might have a user-friendly illness and additionally they're all distinctive an prolonged time.. you cant insure all of them mutually if one is a year previous and the different is like 10 years previous and so on.. the respective insurance enterprise could desire to be responsive to in t! he event that they have been cleared with affliction of their leg bones! ( forgot the ailments call -->> no longer rikets despite it truly is) and that they're going to ask to get a clearance letter out of your vet for each between the cats.

Ambrose Mumma: You should do your research online first for dog food recipes and nutritional requirements.I give my dogs homemade food and dry dog food.Dry dog food helps with their teeth, keeping their stool hard, and making sure they get the right amount of nutrients.

Jene Licausi: I live in Wisconsin and my dog gets if from about may till november once a month because in betweent there is no mosquittoes to give it to him and I beileve in because he has never had any type of worm. But it is all up to you

Dalia Causby: A good article to read is on the website of Dr. Malernee. He's a vet in Florida.http://www.evidencebasedvet.comClick on articles and scroll down to the one on heartworm. He proves that the heartworm pill does not need to be given every month. He also links you into the g! overnment's website to let you read the original studies.

Dorinda Metzer: Well Yeah it is but not all the time like tiny left overs once in a while... it causes the dog to throwup and stop eating his own food...It will also Make he's digustin really bad.like pretty much slow.Good Luck

Lorelei Lilburn: yes, but they sometimes can get diorrea from a particular food, if this happens simply dont give it that food, otherwise most dogs LOVE normal food!!!

Dexter Dicostanzo: I was stupid and left some of the stuff where the dog could get it today. She is okay, i got her to the vet within 30 minutes of her ingesting it and they made her vomit, gave her charcoal, fluid, and some tablets for me to give her every 4 hours. She has been shivering for a couple hours. is this something the poison is doing? She does a teeth chattering thing because shes an excitable bordercollie, but now i can actually hear her chattering her teeth and shes doing it faster than usual. ! I was never able to hear it unless i was right next to her and now i c! an hear her doing it from across the room.

Cassondra Vanholland: There are "special diets" you can feed your dog by cooking him "humanized"(is that a word?) food.Alot of people went to this diet when there was the dog food scare last year..but,it is expensive, along with being less safe than chancing on a healthy dog food. You have to make sure all the meat is thoroughly cooked to be safe. And dogs really need the dry crunchiness of pet food to keep their teeth healthy.

Janean Guz: no chocolate, grapes/raisins, or macadamia nuts either, veggies like cooked carrots, and potatoes are good, also meats like hamburger are high in fat if you want low fat , chicken is good

Heidi Creselious: It depends on where you live - you only need to give it to your dog when there are mosquitoes. If you have a cold winter where you are, your dog doesn't need it in the winter.

Marvel Mcaulay: for 10 thousand years we have feed our dogs the same things we ate. just do not fe! ed them sugars or cheeses both are bad for their digestion.

Thomas Riner: **I know how to use google, it is not necessary to give my links to insurance companies. Thanks**I'm looking around at some possible insurance for my dog. She's about 2 years old. I do not follow the "recommended" vaccine schedule and would not be interested in getting the "well care" type insurance. I am just looking at what would be considered for people to be "catastrophic care" insurance. (ex. Fractures, ACL, etc)I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with insurance they could share... Were the things you expected to be covered actually covered? Was the reimbursement an easy process or not worth the hassle? Did you get reimbursed an amount that you expected? What company do you use? Are there any companies you have heard are not good?

Irma Poiter: It's best to NOT feed your dog human food so he/she doesn't get confused with what he's allowed to eat and not. Also there are ! a lot of things they cannot digest very well so best to stay away. Ther! e is human grade dog food, wet and dry available if you do some research in your area.

Boyce Gilhooly: Yes, he needs it every single month. I can't imagine why this should be a problem - there are generic versions of heartguard that are very cheap - ask your vet for generic or buy it online from an Australian supply house. You don't need a prescription there.

Gabriel Realmuto: YES your dogs NEEDS heartworm medicine every month, you may be able to push it to every 5 or 6 weeks but not more than that. The flea and tick meds you don't have to give every month depending on where you live, ticks die after the first frost of the year and don't come back until it gets warmer.

Saran Stealy: I get Dog fancy magazine and it says that table food should only make up 10% of your dog's calories from food. I have always heard table food is bad for dogs. A good nutritional dog food is best for them like IAMS or PURINA. You can always ask a vet the dog food he/she recomm! ends depending on your dog's size and breed. Good Luck!

Hollis Demasters: I think you should call your vet and ask, especially if more symptom arises.you can also ask an online vet, they are certified vet/vet tech and they are really helpful. they do charge you but only if you are sattisfied. he's a linkhttp://www.justanswer.com/sip/veterinary?r=ppc|ga|...hope this helpsgood luck and i hope your dog will be okay

Phil Kuarez: Most people will tell you don`t. dog food is the best for your dog.I do know a lot of small breeds can get serious medical problems if they do not eat the right food.I just had to my dog down 2 weeks ago and I`d swear looked like she had mad cow disease. she was 17 years old and ate the same food for years until it was recalled after they found out what was causing mad cow.Dog food is made from food deemed unfit for human consumption.I think say don`t feed your dog human food is a lie spread by corporations ....Show more

Manual Burti! s: Some dogs can eat human food easily, while others get indigestion an! d lose health stamina simply due to the decrease in vitamins and important substances that would readily exist in normal dog food. You could give them a chip here and there as a kind of way to integrate them into the family, however these usually cut down on your dog's overall health and may decrease their lifetime. The safest option, don't feed them human food. They may get picky and only want to eat your food. This would be bad with visitors cause your dog would be used to begging for food from the table; bad doggie manners....Show more
